Venus: a heat-trapping neighbor

Venus is the second planet from the Sun. Thick clouds hide its rocky surface, and it is hotter at the surface than any other planet.

Venus turns very slowly and in the opposite direction from most planets. It has no moon.

Wonder about this

Is Venus hot because it is the nearest planet to the Sun?

A science clue

No. Mercury is nearer. Venus’s powerful greenhouse effect is the key to its extreme surface heat.
