Venus: a heat-trapping neighbor
Venus’s atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide. Its strong greenhouse effect limits the escape of infrared energy, while the surface experiences crushing atmospheric pressure.
Although Venus is similar to Earth in size, the two worlds have very different conditions. Calling Venus Earth’s twin describes a size comparison, not a safe or habitable environment.
Wonder about this
Is Venus hot because it is the nearest planet to the Sun?
A science clue
No. Mercury is nearer. Venus’s powerful greenhouse effect is the key to its extreme surface heat.
