The Sun: our nearby star
The Sun is a sphere of hot plasma held together by gravity. Nuclear fusion in its core combines hydrogen nuclei into helium and releases energy; it does not burn like a wood fire.
Its gravity governs the Solar System, while sunlight powers much of Earth’s weather and food webs. A yellow drawing is a useful symbol, not a photograph: the Sun’s visible light contains many colors.
Wonder about this
Is the Sun the biggest planet?
A science clue
No. It is our star, a different kind of object from a planet.
