How stars are born and shine

Stars begin in clouds of gas and dust. Gravity gathers some of that material into a growing, warming ball.

When conditions deep inside are right, nuclear fusion starts. A star’s mass strongly affects how long it shines.

Wonder about this

Do the most massive stars always live the longest?

A science clue

No. They generally use fuel much faster and have shorter lifetimes.
