How stars are born and shine

A collapsing gas cloud releases gravitational energy. A protostar becomes a main-sequence star when sustained hydrogen fusion supplies energy that supports it against further collapse.

More massive stars use their fuel much faster and can have shorter lives despite starting with more material. Not every star ends as a black hole: outcomes depend strongly on initial mass and later evolution.

Wonder about this

Do the most massive stars always live the longest?

A science clue

No. They generally use fuel much faster and have shorter lifetimes.
