Pluto: a small world with big surprises

Pluto shares its orbital neighborhood with many Kuiper Belt objects. Its classification distinguishes it from the eight planets; it was not destroyed, removed from space, or turned into a moon.

At Pluto’s very low temperatures, water ice can act as mountain-building material, while more volatile nitrogen ice moves across plains. Different materials behave differently when temperature changes.

Wonder about this

When Pluto became a dwarf planet, did its physical world change?

A science clue

No. Scientists changed its classification, not the world itself.
