Our Moon: a turning companion

Tidal interactions led to synchronous rotation: the Moon’s spin period matches its orbital period around Earth. Facing Earth consistently does not mean the Moon never rotates.

The Moon reflects sunlight rather than making its own visible light. Its changing phases and an eclipse are different effects; the far side is not a permanently dark hemisphere.

Wonder about this

Does the far side of the Moon stay dark forever?

A science clue

No. Both near and far sides experience daylight and darkness.
