Meteoroid, meteor, or meteorite?
A small rocky or metallic object traveling in space is a meteoroid. The bright streak made as material enters our atmosphere is a meteor.
If a piece reaches the ground, we call that piece a meteorite. A shooting star is not really a star falling.
Wonder about this
Is the bright streak itself called a meteorite?
A science clue
No. The streak is a meteor; a surviving piece on the ground is a meteorite.
