Meteoroid, meteor, or meteorite?
These names distinguish the object in space, the atmospheric light phenomenon, and material that survives to the surface. Heating and interaction with the atmosphere make the visible streak.
Most incoming small material does not survive as a recognizable meteorite. A glowing streak alone does not tell an observer that something landed nearby; identifying a meteorite requires evidence.
Wonder about this
Is the bright streak itself called a meteorite?
A science clue
No. The streak is a meteor; a surviving piece on the ground is a meteorite.
