Exoplanets: worlds around other stars
A transit produces a small, temporary decrease in a star’s measured brightness when an orbiting planet crosses our line of sight. Astronomers also use other detection methods, including stellar motion.
One dip does not prove a planet exists: other stars or instrumental effects can imitate a signal. A planet in a habitable zone is a promising study target, not a guarantee of oceans or life.
Wonder about this
Does one tiny dip in starlight prove there is a planet?
A science clue
No. Scientists check repeated signals and alternative explanations.
